Close the 3.42 Gap: Help Raise Math Scores in Bulgarian Schools

In 2025, the average score on the national math entry-level test for 6th-grade students was 3.42, on a scale from 2 to 6. This shows how urgently Bulgarian students need better ways to learn math. Together we can change that.

Through its Better at Math with Khan Academy program, the Education Without Backpacks trains and mentors teachers to use Khan’s tools skillfully in class. Teachers set goals, track student progress in real time, and personalize feedback, helping students build confidence, master key skills, and raise math results.

The program is already transforming teaching in 28 schools across Bulgaria, reaching thousands of students.

Why this works?

Khan Academy is the world’s #1 platform for free math and science learning, proven to raise achievement. In the 2024-25 school year, the platform had almost 190M registered users. Khan Academy is available in 190+ countries and 55+ languages.

A recent study showed that students who spend just 30 minutes per week on Khan Academy throughout the school year – around 18 hours in total – gain roughly 20% more knowledge than expected.

The research also revealed that students who consistently master two to three skills each week (adding up to about 60 extra skills over the year) improve their overall learning by approximately 30%.

Students who want to learn

Khan Academy feels like a game! It motivates students by letting them track their progress skill by skill and by percentage, earn points, badges, and avatars, and engage with fun tools like the LearnStorm tracker.

Expected outcomes for schools participating in the program

  • Improved math performance – By using the platform regularly for at least 30 minutes per week, students will show measurable progress in math, thanks to the personalized approach and access to Khan Academy’s interactive tools.
  • Increased motivation – The gamified system on the platform will encourage students to learn more actively and strive for achievement.
  • Expanded teaching practices – By integrating Khan Academy into the classroom, teachers will broaden their instructional methods and enrich the learning process with new resources and strategies that support student success.
  • Teacher support and time savings – Khan Academy helps teachers save time by automatically grading assignments and assessments. It also offers well-organized digital content that can easily be assigned to different students based on their individual levels – with just one click.

What else can you expect from the program?

It’s impossible to compare a traditional math lesson where students copy problems from the board to Khan Academy! The platform presents content in such an interactive way. This is the future, and it’s already in our school!

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is Khan Academy?

Khan Academy is the world’s largest educational platform. It’s completely free for everyone, no matter where they are. Just 30 minutes of learning per week with Khan Academy is enough for students to improve their math skills and academic performance.
Our experience and various studies show that students who work with Khan Academy not only improve their knowledge and math skills, but also demonstrate higher cognitive, emotional, and behavioral engagement with learning.

What is the “Better in Maths with Khan Academy” Program?

Launching in the 2025/2026 school year, this three-year program supports the intensive introduction of Khan Academy—the largest and fully free educational platform—into schools, with the aim of improving students’ motivation, skills, and math outcomes through mastery-based learning, building current-year competencies, and filling in knowledge gaps from previous years.

Which Schools Can Join the Program?

The program targets schools with students from grades 5 to 12. Priority is given to schools with lower or average math results on national standardized tests, schools with vulnerable and underprivileged students, and those able to provide internet-connected devices and co-financing for participation in the program.

What Will Teachers Receive?

Teachers will undergo intensive training, receive regular mentoring from experienced education specialists and peer teachers, and gain access to resources and guidance for integrating Khan Academy into their classrooms. This includes differentiated instruction strategies, especially valuable when working with students with diverse learning needs and paces.

How Long Is the Program and What Are the Schools’ Commitments?

The program spans three school years: 2025/2026, 2026/2027, and 2027/2028.
Teachers in the program must use Khan Academy with their students for at least 30 minutes per week for practice and assignments.

Each selected school will need to include around 10 teachers in the initial intensive training, of which approximately 3 math teachers should participate actively with their students throughout the entire 3-year program.
Additionally, the school will appoint one representative (such as a vice principal, educational technology specialist, or teacher) for specialized training as a “Digital School Leader.” This person will later provide technical support to teachers using Khan Academy and to the wider school staff, if needed.

The school will sign an agreement with Education Without Backpacks, accepting the services provided by the organization with primary financial support from the UniCredit Foundation. The school will also commit to covering its co-financing for participation in the program (see above).

How Can My School Apply for the Program?

The application period for the current phase has ended. If you’d like your school to take part in the next round, please fill out this form to express your interest. We’ll get in touch when applications reopen.

How Will the Schools Be Selected?

After the application deadline, a committee will review all applications. Schools that pass the initial eligibility round will be invited to two online meetings with the Education Without Backpacks’ team for a more in-depth discussion and selection process.
