Khan offers over 14,000 video lessons and 100,000 interactive exercises. Teachers receive useful information for managing the classroom. The courses cover kindergarten, subjects from 1st to 12th grades, university levels and many cultural topics. Khan Academy has 102 million users in 190 countries.

Established in the United States in 2006, the portal has been translated into more than 60 languages, with Bulgarian having some of the best content coverage. The initiative in Bulgaria is represented by the “Education Without Backpacks” association.

All of this is freely available to anyone anywhere. That includes distance teaching and learning.

Khan Academy mobile learning app in Bulgarian is the first application of its kind in Bulgaria, offering exercises and lessons across the general education subjects.

Khan's Bulgarian version

Since 2011, thousands of work hours have been invested in the Khan’s Bulgarian version. Even before the establishment of “Education Without Backpacks”, hundreds of volunteers had already been working on the Bulgarian version – translators, proofreaders, teachers, and experts in various fields. Khan’s Bulgarian version (bg.khanacademy.org) contains about 6,000 translated video lessons (as of 2021), tens of thousands of exercises and tests, as well as articles in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Computer Science and Programming, Health and Medicine, World History, Music, Philosophy and Critical Thinking; Environmental Science. Tens of thousands users learn in Bulgarian monthly. The platform was recommended by the Ministry of Education and Science to all schools at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020.

The Bulgarian version is available thanks to the support of organizations such as the America for Bulgaria Foundation – main partner, Nedelya Chain of Confectioneries, the US Embassy in Bulgaria, the TELUS International Bulgaria Community Board, Skyscanner, Microsoft Bulgaria, Deloitte Bulgaria, many individual donors, and volunteers. In 2017, we implemented the first project of the Europe Program together with Sofia Municipality for pilot use of the Khan Academy in two schools in the capital. In the meantime, we present Khan Academy to hundreds of students and teachers as part of school visits across the country. We also conduct trainings for teachers with qualification credits about “Tools for attractive education” and “Workshop for innovative practices from around the world” together with the Center for Creative Training and other partners.

We continuously translate, proofread, dub and curriculum-align new content from Khan Academy. We also regularly train teachers and share the platform among teachers, students, and parents: for easy access to world-class education for even more Bulgarian children!
